Superlambanana Facts

Fact #1

The original Super Lambanana is a statue that has been in Liverpool since 1998 and was created to mark the ArtTransPennine Exhibition at the Tate Gallery in Liverpool, by Japanese artist Taro Chiezo.

Fact #2

The original Superlambanana stands at about 15 feet tall and weighs around 8 tonnes, and is painted bright yellow in colour.

Fact #3

The original Superlambanana has moved around Liverpool but it currently resides outside the Liverpool John Moores University Avril Roberts Library on Tithebarn Street, and is number 119 in the Super Lambanana Hunt.

Taro Chiezo has explained that it is an ironic statement on the dangers of genetic engineering whilst also reflecting the playful and fun nature of Merseyside.

Chiezo actually only made a four inch plasticine model, however it was reproduced in its current size by Andy Small.

Fact #6

The smaller replica Super Lambananas that are currently all over Liverpool’s streets stand at approximately 180 cm tall, with each being especially designed for the Go Superlambanana’s event.

Fact #7

Each replica superlambanana has been sponsored by a local business, with 29 of the Lambananas being decorated by local schools and community groups.

At the end of the go superlambanana event, most of the mini Lambananas will be sold at an auction to raise money for the Lord Mayor’s Charity Appeal.
